About the Game

What Exactly Is Tongits?

If you've ever sat around a bilihan ng taho corner or spent a lazy Sunday afternoon in someone's sala, chances are you've already played Tongits. It's a three-player card game that mixes elements of rummy and poker, using a standard 52-card deck. The goal is simple: get rid of all your cards before the other two players do, or have the lowest total card value when someone calls a draw.

What makes Tongits special is how much it rewards sharp thinking and quick reads on your opponents. You can't just play your own hand — you have to watch what your tablemates are collecting, block their sets, and decide when to "tong" (declare victory) or when to fold. It's genuinely strategic, and that's exactly why Pinoys never get tired of it.

At Juan 365, we've brought that same energy online. The platform matches you with real players from across the Philippines, so every game feels authentic — none of that bot-versus-bot nonsense you find on some other sites.

Game Mechanics

How Tongits Is Played — A Quick Breakdown

Tongits is played by exactly three players. The dealer gets 13 cards while the other two receive 12 each. The remaining cards form the draw pile in the center of the table.

On each turn, a player draws one card — either from the pile or from the card the previous player discarded. The objective is to form valid card combinations called melds: either a sequence of three or more cards of the same suit (a run), or a set of three or more cards of the same rank (a trio or quartet). Players lay down melds to reduce the total value of cards still in their hand.

A player wins by achieving Tongits — going out with zero remaining cards — or by calling a Draw when the stock pile runs out. In a draw, whoever has the lowest total card value wins.

The real depth of Tongits comes from reading the table. If you notice your opponent constantly picking up from the discard pile, you know exactly what they're building — and you can block them by holding onto cards they need. It's that push-and-pull that makes Juan 365's Tongits tables some of the most exciting online.

Card Values

Tongits Card Point Values at Juan 365

Card Point Value Note
Ace (A) 1 point Lowest value
2 through 9 Face value (2–9 pts) Standard counting
10, J, Q, K 10 points each High risk if unplayed

In a Draw declaration, the player with the lowest total point count among unmelded cards wins the pot. Face cards (10, J, Q, K) are the biggest liabilities — get them into melds early or discard them strategically.

Pro Tips

Tongits Strategy: Tips From Seasoned Juan 365 Players

These aren't just generic advice — this is what actually works at our tables.

Face cards — 10, Jack, Queen, King — each carry 10 points. If you're sitting with three or four of them that don't form a meld, you're in serious trouble the moment someone calls a Draw. Your first priority after the opening draw should be to either slot face cards into runs/sets or discard them fast. Don't hold onto a lone King hoping for the other two to show up unless you already have a pair.

In Juan 365's online Tongits, you can see what everyone discards. That information is gold. If you see an opponent picking up 7s and 8s, hold your 9 of spades — don't hand them a sequence completion. Conversely, if you need a card that opponents keep discarding, stay patient; it will come around again.

Calling a Draw is a powerful move but it only works if you're confident you have the lowest point count. Before you call it, mentally tally what your opponents might be holding. If one of them has been laying down melds consistently, their hand count could be lower than yours. A premature Draw call can hand the win to someone else. Save it for when you're sitting below 10 points with multiple melds already on the table.

Once you spot what your two opponents are building, actively withhold those cards — even if it means holding a higher-point card a round or two longer. This slows them down and forces them into suboptimal draws from the deck. Defensive play at Juan 365's Tongits tables can be just as decisive as building your own hand fast.

At Juan 365, Tongits tables range from micro-stakes (entry fees under ₱50) all the way up to high-roller rooms. A good rule of thumb: never bring more than 10% of your total balance to a single session. If you're on a losing streak, step down a level — not up. Chasing losses with bigger bets is the fastest way to an empty wallet, and that's true in Tongits just as much as any other game.
